Pine Tree Is Wind Storm Casualty - Dec. 2008
Dec. 28 wind takes down huge pine on Pin Oak Circle

Jan and Jim Mitchell of Pin Oak Circle lost a 35-ft. pine tree on Sunday, Dec. 28, during the wind storm, when the tree fell onto their driveway. The little girl in pink is daughter Lizzi Mitchell.
Three Separate Accidents On South Bridge - New Year's Day 2009
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a four-car motor vehicle accident at the top of the south bridge, south bound, at 8:19 a.m. Thursday, January 1, 2009. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Koch, on location, reported three separate accidents with one at the base of the bridge, a four-car accident half way up the bridge, and the third, a six-car accident at the top of the bridge. GIFC volunteers extricated one patient involved in the four-car accident who was transported by ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center. There were 11 vehicles involved in the three accidents and a total of 15 sign-offs. The GIFC returned in service at 9:34 a.m. Details may be added to this article as they become available.
Previous to the bridge accidents, the Grand Island Fire Company responded to a request for mutual aid for a fire in the City of Tonawanda at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, January 1, 2009. The house fire, located on Stark Avenue, took the life of a female in her 20's.
Island firefighters stood by in the City of Tonawanda Fire Headquarters, responding to an EMS call on Main Street for a patient having difficulty breathing. The Grand Island Fire Company returned in service from the City of Tonawanda at 10:13 a.m.

The photos tell the story of Sunday's high winds that gusted to 75 mph (a hurricane calls for 74 mph). A record high temperature was recorded Saturday afternoon, December 27th. By 6 p.m. it had dropped to 48 degrees and after that, took a nose dive to 30 degrees in about one hour.

Love Road Closed Due To Snapped Power Pole - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to the Wilson Farms Store, 1787 Love Road, for a snapped primary power pole at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 28th. The pole, located near propane tanks, held a large National Grid light stanchion. The Fire Company shut down traffic on Love Road and notified the Erie County Sheriff's Department. National Grid was on location at 3 p.m. The GIFC remained on the scene for most of the afternoon.
Sunday's Wind Damage - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to numerous calls for damage to trees and lines beginning at 8:29 a.m. Sunday, December 28th.
Second Assistant Fire Chief Chris Soluri reported the following:
8:29 a.m. - 3700 block of East River Road, large tree down dislodging the National Grid Pole from the ground and lowering secondary power lines, telephone and cable lines over the roadway causing a hazard. Roadway was closed and National Grid was summoned to the scene.
8:34 a.m. - 1000 block of Baseline Road - tree down in roadway which was removed by GIFCo and road was reopened.
8:54 a.m. - 3323 Staley Road - Commercial Fire Alarm at Grand Island School District wood shop on Eco Island, found to be a false alarm after a heat detector activation in zone 10.
9:02 a.m. - 2500 block of Bedell Road for a Residential Fire Alarm - False Alarm - no fire.

Head-on MVA In Front of McMahon's Restaurant - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a head-on motor vehicle accident with injuries in front of 1849 Grand Island Blvd., McMahon's Family Restaurant, at 8:12 a.m. Sunday, December 28, 2008. The GIFC extricated and treated three patients who were transported to area hospitals. Grand Island Blvd. was closed to traffic at 8:35 a.m. The Grand Island Fire Company returned in service at 9:05 a.m.
UPDATE - Injured in the accident were Charles Campanella, 43, of Colonial Drive West; Joan Droit, 72, of Marjorie Drive; and Marie Shoemaker, 78, of Marjorie Drive. Ms. Shoemaker died Sunday evening at ECMC. Photos and details to follow in the Wed., Dec. 31st edition of the Isledegrande.com.
Vehicle Hits House In Sandy Beach Neighborhood - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to Greenway and Huth roads at 5:25 a.m. Sunday, December 28, 2008 where a vehicle struck a house. The address was later listed as 1918 Huth Road. Grand Island Rescue #7 responded to 99 Autumnwood Drive where the driver was assessed and found not injured. The GIFC reported a three-foot hole in the wall of the house. The Erie County Sheriff's Dept. responded and the town building inspector arrived at 5:40 a.m. The scene was turned over the Sheriff's Dept. and the GIFC was in service at 5:57 a.m.
East River Water Main Break - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company received a request from the Erie County Sheriff's Department for GIFC fire police assistance to respond to 2350 East River Road for a water main break at 5:28 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008.
The Sheriff's Dept. reported a considerable amount of mud blocking the roadway. Grand Island Water Dept. employees had been at the location earlier in the day and returned to attempt to shut off the water in the area. Grand Island Fire Company units returned in service at 6:02 p.m.

Snowmobile Accident in Deerwood Lane Area - Dec. 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of snowmobile flipped over in the area of Deerwood Lane with one rider possibly injured at 5:47 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2008. GIFC medical responders assessed one patient. The injured rider, Tim Jankowiak of Deerwood Lane,
was transported to the Erie County Medical Center by Twin City Ambulance and the GIFC returned in service at 6:15 p.m. Updates may be added to this story as they become available.

The Grand Island Central School District delivered a recorded message at 6 a.m. Friday, December 19th reporting that all Grand Island schools were closed.
Grand Island Fire Company volunteers began a weather watch standby at Fire Headquarters at 10:10 a.m.
Fire Chief Greg Butcher requested a stand-by crew to report to Fire Headquarters at 11:06 a.m. due to the weather.
When Isledegrande.com editor Teddy Linenfelser attempted to open her front door at 5 p.m., she found it was impossible. A trip through the garage to the outside made her realize this really is a storm, with over a foot of snow piled up across the driveway and much more drifted against the door! The Weather Channel, 49, reported blizzard conditions.

Shooting On West River Road - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to an apparent shooting at an address in the 1900 block of West River Road at 3:41 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008. It was reported that the gun was under the victim, a 27-year-old male, who had been shot. The scene was turned over to the Erie County Sheriff's Department and the GIFC returned in service at 4:15 p.m.

Island UNICEF Results - 2008
The final UNICEF totals are in from the HSBC Bank. The Island's total collection came to $1,668.21.
Included was a generous donation from Shirley and Lincoln Jankowski in North Carolina, formerly of Harvey Road, Grand Island, who wanted it credited to the Grand island Central Schools collection.
"Due to the current state of the economy, we did not match last year's total of $2,140, although the need continues," UNICEF Chairman Lee Tetkowski said this week.
A tetanus shot costs only about 7 cents each to give, but in Sierra Leone, one doesn't always have 7 cents. This is one of many important ways UNICEF uses your contribution!

MVA Love & Parkway - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident at Love Road and the South State Parkway at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008. One patient was extricated, evaluated, and transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital. A second patient was evaluated and signed off. The parkway was closed to traffic and the GIFC remained on scene to assist the tow truck.Details will be posted as they become available.
Thanksgiving Day Fire Alarm at Center Ct. Apartment - 2008
An alarm of fire at 2240 Center Court South at 11:12 a.m. Thursday, November 27, 2008 was phoned in by a caller from another apartment, who reported a smoke detector going off and the smell of smoke in an unoccupied apartment. Grand Island Fire Company volunteers investigated with nothing found. The GIFC then investigated all units in the building. The smoke was due to a faulty space heater on the first floor. The hazard was removed and the GIFC returned in service at 11:32 a.m.

Public Comment Period Opens For Greenway Projects - 2008
Wed., November 26, 2008 . . .The Niagara River Greenway Commission announced today that the public comment period has opened for the seventh round of projects. In addition, the Commission also announced that the public comment time will close at the end of the day on December 31, 2008.
Projects will be posted on the website at www.niagaragreenway.org beginning Tuesday, November 25, 2008 and public comment will be accepted until December 31, 2008. Comments may be submitted either at the website or by hard copy to the Commission at 2136 West Oakfield Road, Grand Island, NY 14072.

Once the public comment period has ended, the Niagara River Greenway Commission will review projects and on January 20, 2009 vote on the consistency of the projects in relations to the award winning Niagara River Greenway Plan. Project Sponsors will then be notified in writing of the Commission's findings along with copies of the public's comments. The appropriate standing committee will also receive a copy of the finding where funding will be decided.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission is a public benefit corporation established by Chapter 460 of the laws of 2004, and charged with the planning and development of a greenway of interconnected parks, river access points and waterfront trails along the Niagara River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario at the site of the historic Fort Niagara.

Center Ct. Apartment Fire Causes Building Evacuation - 2008

An alarm of fire at 2268 Center Court North at 9:28 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2008 caused the evacuation of the double wide apartment building. Grand Island Fire Chief Greg Butcher, reporting heavy smoke coming from the third floor of the building, deemed this a working fire and requested a FAST team from the Town of Tonawanda and a crew from Sheridan Park Vol. Fire Company. City of Tonawanda Fire Company was called to the scene and Brighton Vol. Fire Company was requested to fill Grand Island Fire Company's hall. The Red Cross was notified for sheltering for the 12 units affected by the fire.
Fire Chief Butcher reported the fire, which burned through the roof, was knocked down at 9:59 p.m. Two patients were evaluated with one transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital by ambulance. Evacuees were moved to the apartment complex office and later to the homes of relatives and friends as well as vacant apartments. Sgt. Scott Joslyn of the Erie County Sheriff’s Dept. reported that ECSD investigators suspect the cause of the fire is electrical. Estimated damage was set at $75,000 to the apartment building.

Chimney Fire On Sandy Beach Rd. Causes No Damage - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to
3298 Sandy Beach Road for a chimney fire at 7:52 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2008. The caller reported that everyone was out of the house. A first responder reported smoke in the structure. The GIFC made a thorough investigation of the chimney and interior of the house and ascertained that there was no fire burning except in the firebox and that fire was out at 8:21 p.m. Finding no damage, the GIFC ventilated the structure and returned in service at 8:30 p.m.

State Parks To Issue Snowmobile Permits - Nov. 2008
Beaver Island State Park will begin issuing permits on December 3, 2008 that will allow snowmobilers to use the more than 12 miles of designated and signed snowmobile trails on State Park property, located on Grand Island. The trails will be open between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. beginning Monday, December 15, 2008.
There is no fee for the "Snowmobile Use Permit", but applicants must present a valid registration and proof of current insurance. A decal will be issued with the permit along with a copy of the rules and regulations and map showing the location of the designated trails and parking areas.
Major Iacovitti of the NYS Park Police reminds all snowmobilers that the park lands are off limits until December 15th and that there must be at least three inches of snow before the trails will be open.
Permits will be available at the Beaver Island State Park Office on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and also at the Grand Island Rod & Gun Club, 1083 Whitehaven Road, on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. during the Grand Island Snowmobile Club meeting.

Thursday, November 20th - The Grand Island Fire Company responded to an alarm of fire on Park Lane near Sandra Drive for a house under construction on fire at 6:17 p.m.
Thursday, November 20th - Police emergency, reported to station #3 at 6:58 p.m. GIFC EMS responded to an address on Carl Road where one patient was treated and transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital by Twin City Ambulance.
Friday, November 21st - Motor vehicle accident on the 190 south bound at 9:30 p.m. A vehicle was in the ditch at the West River Pkwy. exit. Two patients with minors injuries were out of the vehicle when the GIFC arrived.
West River Service Road News - Nov. 2008

The road resurfacing of the West River Service Road was completed last year by NYS, however, the service road has not been turned over to the Town of Grand Island yet. You may have noticed a surveying crew working on the west side of the Parkway. They are establishing the West River Service Road legal reference line, which is the first step in turning over the road to the town. After the turnover, the Town will then have complete ownership and will do snowplowing and all required maintenance.

What is a Polar Plunge? A wild, crazy and FUN event to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York! Each year, Special Olympics Polar Plunge’s are held throughout the country to attract thousands of chilled souls to engage in a commendable and thrilling fundraising event. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 to take the plunge and receive a commemorative sweatshirt. Registration begins at 9am and the Plunge will take place at noon.
The Special Olympics Polar Plunges are Law Enforcement Torch Run events. Internationally, the Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots public awareness and fundraising vehicle for Special Olympics. Last year more than $34 million dollars was raised through LETR initiatives, including polar plunges. Thousands of officers from hundreds of agencies across New York are a part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The Verona Beach Polar Plunge marks the first Plunge of the 2008-2009 Plunge Series! All funds support our programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Donations For Troops Overseas - Nov. 2008
The Grand Island Metro office is seeking donations and also information from the families of those serving with the 65th Military Police Co. in South Baghdad. Donations are requested now so that gifts, including phone cards, may arrive in time for the holidays. Metro Town Center Realty, 1980 Whitehaven Road, is honoring Sgt. Zachary T. Scibilia.
Donations are being accepted at all Metro offices, serving five counties. Checks payable to Metro Administration may be dropped off between noon and 3 p.m. through November 20. "If you have a family member serving, please contact the Metro Office," Betty Harris said this week. "Let's remember the troops for the holidays and thank them for their dedicated services," she said. For further information, call Betty at 472-3739.

According to Town Clerk Patricia Frentzel, unofficially about 10,500 residents voted in the November 4, 2008 election. This is about a 75% turnout for Grand Island. Unofficial numbers follow:

Health Fair & Fundraiser - Nov. 2008
A Health Fair and Workout is being held as a St. Jude fundraiser on Saturday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Island Fitness Center located in the Grand Island Holiday Inn. Michele Iannello: Town Meeting - Nov. 2008
Erie County Legislator Michele Iannello, D-Kenmore, will host some town meetings regarding the Erie County proposed budget. The first will be at 6 p. m. Thursday in Tonawanda City Hall, 200 Niagara Street.
Comptroller Marc Polancarz will attend to explain the budget and answer questions. Two other meetings will take place, one at 6 p. m. Thursday, November 13 in Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road, and one in Kenmore at a date to be announced.

DEC Investigating Fire Off East River Road - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company, under the direction of Chief Greg Butcher, responded to a report of a
20' x 40' brush fire across the street from 3614 East River Road in the area of the Niagara Sailing Club at 11:06 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008. The caller reported that flames were 10 feet high. The DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) arrived at 12:35 p.m. and proceeded to investigate the burning of questionable materials. The GIFC returned in service 12:43 p.m. and the scene was turned over to the DEC and the State Police.

According to Fire Chief Greg Butcher, a member of the Niagara Sailing Club, without the Club's permission, started a fire using gasoline, to burn brush, which is against the law. The fire also ignited a fiberglass sailing skif (small boat). The Club member was issued tickets by the DEC for the violations of the Conservation Law.

Head-on Accident In Front Of Sidway School - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to 2451 Baseline Road, in front of Sidway Elementary School for a two-car, head-on motor vehicle accident at 1:33 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2008. Two patients were evaluated by GIFC medics with one sign-off and one transported to Millard Fillmore Hospital by ambulance.

Three-Car MVA South Bound, South Bridge - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a
three-car motor vehicle accident on the 190, south bound at the base of the south bridge on the Tonawanda side at 7:29 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2008. The New York State Police also responded. This was a PDO (property damage only). GIFC was back in service at 7:39 a.m.

Vehicle Rolls Over East River Embankment - 2008

The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a vehicle that rolled over the embankment at 1004 East River Road at 6:11 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2008. The accident involved one car and one patient who was out of the vehicle when GIFC medics arrived on the scene. Treatment for the driver was unnecessary. The Erie County Sheriff's Department also responded to the incident.
GIFC firefighters, who closed East River Road between Broadway and North Colony roads, returned in service at 6:25 p.m.

Lately, Island residents have reported seeing several barges and workboats working in the middle of the Niagara River. After making a few inquiries we learned that the vessels belonged to H. L. Darling, a local marine contractor. The New York Power Authority contracted with this firm for the installation of fish attraction structures in the Niagara River. During the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission relicensing proceedings for the Niagara Power Project in Lewiston, New York government agencies and stakeholder groups identified mitigation measures that would compensate for the environmental impacts that were associated with the installation and operation of this hydropower facility. Among these was a plan to improve fish habitat values in the east branch of the Niagara River. This plan is now becoming reality as various types on rock structures are being placed on the relatively smooth and featureless bottom of the river. The structures will serve as sites for fish feeding, resting and cover and are expected to attract recreationally important sport fish species such as the yellow perch, musky and smallmouth bass. The fish attraction project has received regulatory approval from the US Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Shirley and Lincoln Jankowski, formerly of Harvey Road, surprised local UNICEF Chair, Lee Tetkowski, with a generous donation, the first for this year¹s Halloween Trick or Treat Halloween collection. Our boys and girls, our families, Boy Scout Troop 254, our local bank and community, with dedicated involvement of our schools, have made Grand Island unique in continuously participating in this annual world cause.
Lani Black at Sidway School, Kathy Fik at Kaegebein, Jennifer Kropidlowski at Huth Road, and Sarah Bifaro at the Connor Middle School are providing educational information and those individual, little, orange cartons to Grand Island¹s youngsters. Now it is up to you to make them jingle with coins and bills and hope for disadvantaged children in less fortunate places.

Grand Island Dollars for Scholars kicked off its First 5K Run and one-mile Fun Walk on Saturday, October 4, 2008 to raise funds for the 2009 Grand Island student scholarships. Nearly 85 runners and walkers showed up on a bright and sunny day to participate in the event.
Dollars for Scholars president Jim Sharpe said, “We got great comments from everyone who participated in the run. They were especially impressed with the course. Runners from off Island could not believe how beautiful Veteran’s Park and the Grand Island bike path were and they are looking forward to coming back next year for the Run. We are very pleased at the support from the community and surrounding area runners.”
Sharpe continued, “A lot of credit goes out to Event Director Mike Hilliker, Event Assistant Laura Anderson, Linda Tufillaro from Town Recreation Department, Committee Members Bev Kinney, Judy Schmidt, Joanne Kud, Johanna Blue, Jennifer Peresie, Sonja Miller, Councilwoman Mary Cooke and more than 20 volunteers, for the outstanding job they did putting this event together. We were also pleased to have had on hand Dick Bessel to start our first race off.”

Fatal Accident On North Bridge
North Bound 190 Closed - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to an MVA involving a motorcycle shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2008. The 32-year-old motorcyclist, John Zbock Jr. of Cheektowaga, pronouced dead at the scene, was traveling north on the top of the Grand Island Bridge when his cycle struck the back of a vehicle, causing him to be thrown into the path of a tractor-trailer in the left lane of the bridge. Both lanes were blocked and re-opened to traffic about three hours later. GI Fire Police assisted the NYS Troopers with traffic control and returned in service at 8:04 a.m.

Third Re-Tree WNY
Announced - 2008
Come One, Come All! The third tree planting by Grand Island volunteers, in conjunction with Re-TreeWNY, will happen on Saturday, November 8, 2008, beginning at 9 a.m. All are invited to come and help in this worthwhile community project. Meet at the concession stand in Veterans Park on Bedell Road. 38 trees will be planted that morning in various spots around Veterans Park. Rain date (torrential downpours and/or lightning will cause cancellation-light rain will not) is Sunday, November 9 beginning at 1 p.m. at the concession stand.
Dress for the weather and if you can, bring any of these supplies: gloves, shovel, soil rake, wheelbarrow and clippers or heavy scissors. Mark all equipment and supplies with your name. A short demonstration will be given, showing everyone the proper method for planting the trees. A team consisting of both experienced and new volunteers will be assigned to plant each tree.
Re-TreeWNY is a citizen-driven, non-profit organization that began in response to the October 2006 storm. Since then, over 100 Grand Island volunteers have planted 80 trees purchased from Re-TreeWNY. Plantings have been done on Grand Island Boulevard, in the Town Common, on Fire Company property, and in Veterans Park. Grand Island volunteers will plant trees every May and November as part of this effort. More information about Re-Tree may be found at www.re-treewny.org
Grand Island was awarded a $4,200 grant from the New York State Department of Conservation in 2007 to replace trees and the Town Board added $4,200 to the grant and decided to become a part of Re-TreeWNY. Grand Island’s Re-Tree Municipal Coordinators are Rochelle Smith and Geri Stalica. They have been meeting with a group of town residents interested in trees since April 2007. The group has developed a plan for tree planting, education, and maintenance on Grand Island and is coordinating the twice annual tree plantings. Involved with Rochelle Smith and Geri Stalica in this group are Anne Dyet, Diane Evans, Roy Tilghman, Jim Tomkins, Pat Wydra, Town Recreation Director Linda Tufillaro and Councilwoman Mary Cooke.

Fatal Accident On Whitehaven - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a fatal MVA
(rollover) at 826 Whitehaven Road at 3:37 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2008. The accident involved one car and its driver, Island resident Timothy F. Weczerek, 29, who was killed in the crash. The vehicle, a van, was traveling west on Whitehaven, went off the south side of the road and through a ditch ending up on its roof in a wooded area. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected with the van coming to rest against a tree and on top of him. Grand Island firefighters used special apparatus for extrication. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Teen Bicyclist Struck By Motorcycle, Seriously Injured - 2008

The Grand Island Fire Company responded to an MVA in front of 1970 Grand Island Blvd. at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2008. The accident involved a bicyclist and a motorcycle. A 13-year-old Grand Island boy was riding a
bicycle along Grand Island Blvd. when he was struck by the motorcycle. The victim, in very serious condition, according to Grand Island Fire Chief Greg Butcher, was treated at the scene and transported by Mercy Flight to Women's and Children's Hospital. The boy suffered a severe head injury and was not wearing a helmet according to the Erie County Sheriff's Department. The
motorcycle operator, who suffered head abrasions, was treated at the scene and transported via
ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center. GIFCO units were returned to service except for Fire
Police who remained on the scene to assist the Erie County Sheriff's Department with the accident investigation. The AIU (Accident Investigation Unit) arrived on
location at about 2:40 p.m. Grand Island Blvd was close
for some time due to the investigation.
The bicyclist was driving southbound on Rt. 324 and crossed the road in front of the motorcycle operated by Mark Wolbert, 31, of Northeast, PA.

Harvey Road Closed - October 2008
Harvey Road will be closed to all traffic starting at 7 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2008. The closure will allow replacement of a culvert located at 2000 Harvey Road. The road is expected to re-open on Friday, October 17th. The exact date for re-opening of the road depends on favorable weather late next week. Paving must be completed prior to opening the road. Weather related delays may extend the road closure into the beginning of the following week.
Local traffic for residents and deliveries will be permitted during the construction project. Traffic for addresses lower than 2000 Harvey Road should enter from either East River Road or from Park Place. Traffic for addresses above 2000 Harvey Road should enter from Whitehaven Road.

CROP Walk Results - 2008
Just under 100 men, woman and children turned out on Sunday, September 28 at 1:00 p.m. at Beaver Island State Park to take part in Grand Island's 21st annual CROP Walk for Hunger. After a reading of the Town Board proclamation presented on September 15th to Grand Island's CROP Walk Coordinator, the Rev. Paul Robinson, and a prayer by Trinity United Methodist Church's new pastor, the Rev. Jeff Childs, the count down began. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1....at which time the line of children holding a CROP banner, pushed through the banner and led the way to the entry of the park and beyond. Cameras flashed and cheers were heard as the crowd moved like a slow marathon, walking in solidarity with those who have to walk miles every day for water, firewood and food. At the half way point, Kaegebein School, water and apples were available, provided by St. Timothy Lutheran Church, A car driven by Jess Traumenhauser patrolled the route, eventually driving folks who were unable to complete the walk by foot, back to the starting point. The initial guess regarding money raised was around $4000. It should be noted that a figure of $67,000 that found its way into pre-walk publications was actually the total of all CROP walks in the WNY area. Last year's Grand Island Crop walk actually raised $4371.

Elusive Brush Fire Extinguished - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a
possible brush fire at 1685 Grand Island Blvd. behind Wendy's Restaurant at 8:14 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Firefighters searched the area and did not immediately find anything burning. The Erie County Sheriff's Department assisted in trying to locate a fire and searched as far north as Whitehaven Road. Eventually a small pile of burning grass was located behind 1718 Stony Point Road and extinguished. The GIFC returned in service at 9:45 p.m.

Accidental Fire Alarm At Kaegebein School - 2008
Grand Island firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation at 1690 Love Road, Kaegebein Elementary School at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Students and staff evacuated the building. The Erie County Sheriff's Department also responded. The alarm system was accidentally set off by construction workers. Grand Island Fire Company returned in service at 11:13 a.m.
Waterford Park Subdivision Moving Along - Sept. 2008

Shown above is the road into what is being developed as Waterford Park, bounded by Riverview Court, East River Road, Riverdale Drive and Beaver Island Parkway, where single family houses will be built by Ryan Homes. The subdivision is located off East River Road on the S curve between Broadway and Fix Road.
Planning Board Chairman Doug Scheid, in a presentation on Monday, May 19, 2006, explained there would be five phases for the development that would begin with 14 lots. At build-out there would be 70 single family homes on lot sizes of 80 by 160. There would be two retention ponds and an east and west loop road. The project would go from Stony Point to East River Road.
The location originally received much criticism from residents in regard to traffic and environmental impacts.

MVA At Stony Pt. & Bedell Sends Two To Hospital - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Stony Point and Bedell roads at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2008. GIFC medics immediately began evaluating and treating four patients. Two patients was transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital by Twin City Ambulance. Two patients signed off. Grand Island Fire returned in service at 6:23 p.m.

Wind Storm Knocks Out Power - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to numerous reports of traffic signals out due to power outages across the Island Sunday, September 14, 2008. The three lights in the center of the Island and at Love Road and the Parkway were reported out at 9:32 p.m. The GIFC responded to an EMS call at 9:32 p.m. where a generator was need to run a patient's medical equipment. The traffic lights at Stony Point and Whitehaven and at Staley/Baseline were also reported out. Grand Island Fire Headquarters was on generator power. Generators were being put into action at the intersections. National Grid had not immediately ascertained the cause for the signal outages. The GIFC also responded to a medical alarm at 10:26 p.m. on Whitehaven Road.
National Grid reported 1,581 homes on the Island were without power Sunday night and early Monday morning. The Buffalo Airport reported winds as high as 52 mph.

Peter Sparks In Court - 2008
Peter Sparks, Sparks Trading Post, Bedell Road, appeared in Grand Island Town Court Thursday evening, September 11, 2008 for a hearing in regard to payment to the Erie County SPCA. A dozen horses and five sheep were confiscated from the Trading Post on Tuesday, August 12 by State Police due to animal cruelty, malnutrition and other issues. The State Police had received a complaint of conditions at the Bedell Road riding stables.

4388 East River Road for a one-car motor vehicle accident with apparent injuries at 9:21 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008. The GIFC assessed and treated one patient for minor injuries suffered when the vehicle struck a tree. The patient was transported to Erie County Medical Center by Twin City Ambulance and Grand Island Fire Company volunteers returned in service at 9:50 a.m.

Boater In Distress - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a boater in distress, possibly suffering a heart attack, in the area of Motor Island and Strawberry Island at 5:26 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2008. The patient was transported by boat to the outside dock at the Buffalo Launch Club, 503 East River Road where GIFC medics immediately began Advanced Life Support. The patient was transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital at 6 p.m. and the Fire Company returned in service shortly thereafter.
Whitehaven Rd. MVA Sends One To Hospital - 2008
Grand Island Fire Company volunteers responded to 2805 Whitehaven Road at Sixth Street for a two-car motor vehicle accident with injuries at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, August 30, 2008. A GIFC firefighter on location reported a collision between a pickup truck and a car. Fire Company medics evaluated two patients with one being transported by Twin City Ambulance to Sisters Hospital and one sign-off. The GIFC returned in service at 7:56 a.m.

Severe thunderstorms and wind lashed their fury Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2008 as the storm crossed the south end of the Island, causing flooding in many areas and bringing down tree branches. The north end was spared with only rain and slight winds. Though the storm, packing wind gusts of 36 mph, only lasted a short time, the two inches of rainfall were too much for the storm drains to handle causing some streets to flood and water to come up through the man hole covers. Flooding was reported in the areas of Broadway and Marilyn Drive areas and the East Park area. Streets in the Duplex area were also flooded. So much rain at one time caused the water from the flooded East Park extension to run off into the already flooded LaSalle Avenue and other streets in that area. For a while the visibility was bad enough for people who were driving when the storm hit to pull over. The thunder rattled homes and Verizon customers lost phone service for a short time because of the storm. Town Highway department workers were on the job trying to keep the storm drains open but the heavy rain was too much. A fair size tree branch fell on LaSalle Avenue, knocking down a ham radio antenna wire. Kids in the neighborhood had fun riding their bikes through the flooded street and riding rubber rafts after the rain turned it into a small sized lake.

The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident, a rollover, at the intersection of Baseline and Fix roads at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Two patients were assessed with one sign-off and one transported to an area hospital by ambulance. Grand Island Fire Company returned in service at 8:46 a.m.

West River Boat Fire - August 24, 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a boat fire in the West River at the tip of Beaver Island State Park at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, August 24,2008. Two occupants of the vessel left the boat and were picked up from the river by other boaters. The GIFC Marine Unit 1 responded and firefighters and equipment were then picked up on shore at West Oakfield Road by the Erie County Sheriff's Marine Unit II and transported to the burning craft where they worked to suppress the fire, still burning at 3:58 when heavy rain began to fall. The fire was out and the GIFC returned to the dock in heavy fog at 4:34 p.m.
The Fire Company was also called out at 3:48 p.m. for a residential alarm set off by lightening, and a smoking transformer at 4:22 p.m.

Boater In Distress Is False Call - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report from the U.S.Coast Guard of a boater in distress in east branch of the Niagara River headed towards the north Grand Island Bridge. The boat was described as white and flying a red distress flag, with one person aboard. The call was received at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2008. Also assisting the GIFC in the search of the vessel was the Erie County Sheriff's Dept. The Coast Guard deemed the initial call as a false report and the GIFC returned in service at 1:25 p.m.

Fire Co. Leads Late Night River Rescue - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of "an attempted suicide," a person jumped into the Niagara River at about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in the area of 909 North Colony Road. The description of the jumper was a blue eyed male wearing only his underwear. Fire Chief Greg Butcher established incident command at 997 East River Road, Turner's Port of Call, at 11:58 p.m. A second swimmer who got into the river to try and talk the man out of his threat, returned to the shore at Broadway and an East River marina when he lost sight of his friend. John S. Camilleri Jr., 37, of North Colony Road, who continued to swim to the Tonawanda shore, was located on the other side of the river at the mouth of the canal by City of Tonawanda police at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, August 20. He was transported to the Erie County Medical Center. Grand Island Fire Company returned in service at the same time.
Assisting the GIFC were the Sheridan Park Fire Company, Erie County Sheriff's Dept. and the United States Coast Guard.

Man Struck By Car in Beaver Island Park - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a man down, struck by a car, in Beaver Island State Park between the beach and the golf course at 5:39 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Firefighters stood by at the gate until police secured the scene and then proceeded to the incident at the back of the marina.
One patient was assessed and transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital by ambulance at 6:14 p.m.

And Into The Lap Of Governor Paterson - August 2008

August 14, 2008 . . .Last Friday was the day that we all had hoped and prayed for, last Friday August 8th the Toll Bill was supposed to make it to the floor in the Senate for a vote and passage by the Senate as they were passing legislation that was unfinished. This Bill to remove the control of the 190 from the Thruway Authority and give it to the NY State D.O.T. was sure to pass if we just had the chance to get to the floor for a vote. That did not happen yet again. On the last day of the session Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno bowed to Thruway Authority pressure and removed the Bill from the floor. This time the Toll Bill was removed from the floor by none other than Governor Paterson.
Apparently the Governor, being pressured by the Thruway Authority, convinced the leadership in the Senate not to allow a floor vote. His claim is, this is not the time to cut funding for infrastructure? The State of New York is in such a fiscal mess and we are facing a deficit of 6 Billion dollars. Is this our fault? Hardly. They should have been watching and never should have passed such excessive budgets in the recent past. Governor Pataki's last budget was 112 Billion. Governor Spitzer's last budget was 123 Billion. If my math is correct this is a one-year jump in spending of 11 Billion dollars, in one year.
The passage of this Bill would represent a 32 Million dollar influx into the severely depressed economy of Western New York. This is not pork or a spending initiative, this is our money staying here instead of going down the black hole of Albany's and the Thruway Authority's massive and habitual financial mismanagement.
How is it possible for the Governor to stop a Bill from even getting to the floor for a vote? This is just another example of the dysfunction of our legislature. So now I am more than happy to go one on one with the Governor.
It seems that all the tough talk we hear from our Western New York delegation is nothing more than hot air.
This is far from over. This simply furthers my resolve to follow this through and all the way to the Executive Chamber. We must get some representation and a fair break from the excessive rules, regulations, mandates, taxes, tolls and someone has got to take responsibility for the dying economy of Western New York. I had hope and faith that Governor Paterson actually cared about us. I am sadly mistaken. In truth he is just like all the rest, full of hot air, platitudes and false hopes for all of us up here in the land where we have earned the reputation of the New York Stepchild.
Our next step should be a lawsuit, a lawsuit to recoup the 180 Million Dollars that we paid for tolls in Buffalo for 10 years longer than the Law allowed. If it was not for the threat of a Lawsuit we would still be paying those tolls. For 73 years commuters have been paying tolls on the Grand Island Bridges, it is far past the time that they should have been removed.
Next year the Thruway Authority will once again "BORROW" 45 million to re-deck the South Bridge. Will this ensure the tolls remain for another 30 years? We need new bridges and the only way we can do it is by bringing in Federal dollars. The longer the delay, the less of a chance we have.

$65,000 Structure Fire on Pleasant Trail - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to 81 Pleasant Trail for a structure fire at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008. The GIFC requested a FAST team from Sheridan Park Vol. Fire Company to assist with the two-story, wood construction fire. This was deemed a working fire with heavy smoke on the second floor. The GIFC evaluated two residents and one firefighter for smoke inhalation. The firefighter was taken off duty. The fire was contained to one room with damage estimated at $65,000 to the structure and $30,000, contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Most Grand Island Fire Company units returned in service at 8:15 p.m.
Horses, Sheep Removed From Sparks Trading Post - 2008
Twelve horses and five sheep were removed from Sparks Trading Post on Bedell Road Tuesday, August 12, 2008 due to animal cruelty, malnutrition and other issues. The animals will be held at the SPCA until the investigation is complete. Owner Peter Sparks was charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty.
National Airborne Day - 2008
The Airborne Community will celebrate August 16, 2008 as National Airborne Day. The United States Army Airborne Forces were formed as a means of inserting combat troops behind enemy lines by parachute. The Grand Island Fire Company responded at 11:32 a.m. Sunday, August 10 to a report of an injured rider who fell from a horse at 2450 Whitehaven Road. An ambulance was on location at 11:49 a.m. The patient was assessed and treated by the GIFC, and was transported to Women & Children's Hospital at 12:01 p.m.

South Bridge MVA - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to the north bound, south Grand Island Bridge for a motor vehicle accident involving two cars and five patients at 1:40 p.m. August 8, 2008. An ambulance responding to the scene, stuck in traffic, arrived at 2:08 p.m. The GIFC assessed the five patients, with four signing off and one treated and transported to the Erie County Medical Center. The Grand Island Fire Company returned in service at 2:16 p.m.

Power Outage on Whitehaven - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to 1290 Whitehaven Road, Whitehaven Road Baptist Church after receiving a report of the smell of natural gas from a passing motorist at 10:30 p.m. August 4, 2008. First responders reported the odor had dissipated in that area and moved their investigation west on Whitehaven. The GIFC determined that the gas leak was at 1330 Whitehaven which was confirmed by National Fuel. The GIFC returned in service at 10:53 p.m. after noting that there was still an active leak at 1330 Whitehaven Road. National Fuel arrived on location at 10:56 p.m.
Power Outage - 2008
Fire Chief Greg Butcher reported at 10:55 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 a wide spread power outage on the Island and that several traffic lights were not working. No other information is available at this time. Updates will be added as they become available.
One Person Injured In 6-Car MVA On North Bridge - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a six-car motor vehicle accident on the north Grand Island Bridge, south bound, shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008. The accident involved seven patients with one transported to South Buffalo Mercy Hospital by ambulance. Six people signed off.
MVA At North Bridge Sends Three To Hospital - 2008
The Grand Island Fire Company responded to an MVA with injuries at the North Grand Island Bridge toll barrier at 12:57 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008. Fire Chief Greg Butcher reported that three vehicles were involved, five patients were assessed by the GIFC with three transported to area hospitals by ambulance. Although the weather forecast was ominous, the skies soon cleared and the paddlers entered the Niagara River to begin Paddles Up Niagara 2008. The event, now in its third year, attracted more than 175 people who plied the waters of the river in 143 canoes and kayaks. As the boats progressed through the paddling course, the Niagara became a dappled array of color that attracted the attention of spectators both on shore and on the water.
“Despite the weather, the event was a complete success,” said Paul Leuchner who is the Paddles Up Niagara Chairman and a Commissioner with the Niagara River Greenway Commission. He noted that this has become a family event and for many paddlers it is now an annual tradition.
During the morning event participants and park visitors had the opportunity to try out canoes and kayaks.
Self rescue demonstrations were conducted by the staff of Eastern Mountain Sports and there were boating, water safety and historic exhibits.
Osias Fischer, a nine-year-old member of the Tuscarora Beaver Clan, gave the traditional Tuscarora Thanksgiving address. Following the event participants were treated to a sumptuous luncheon put on by the Grand Island Historic Society.

An allergic reaction to a bee sting brought the Grand Island Fire Company EMS team to the Town Clerk's Office in town hall, 2255 Baseline Road, at 12:15 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2008. The patient was evaluated and transported by ambulance to Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Koch was officer in charge of the call.

Sunday Storm Does Little Damage - 2008
A very short-lived thunder storm hit Grand Island with extremely strong wind about 10:25 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008. Gusts were measured at 60 mph at the Buffalo Airport. The Grand Island Fire Company responded to a report of a car fire at 2260 Debbie Court at 2:42 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008. Fire Chief Greg Butcher reported it to be an engine compartment fire. The GIFC had the fire extinguished at 2:50 p.m. The car was deemed a total loss with damage set at $4000.

Representatives of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the NYS DOT and the Town of Grand Island officially dedicated the new Grand Island Bike Trail Connection Project on Thursday, July 24th. The bike trail consists of approximately 2.65 miles of multi-use trail segments to and within Buckhorn Island State Park. The new trail provides a safer path for bicyclists and pedestrians looking to observe natural areas in Buckhorn Park.
The project was funded by a $170,000 grant from NYS Parks budget and $750,000 in federal funds.
In his remarks, Supervisor Peter McMahon thanked the Grand Island Engineering Department, NYS Parks, NYS DOT and Rob Belue of the Niagara River Greenway Commission in the completion of the bike trail.
