Anthropology is the study of humankind, from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day. Students of Buffalo State College Anthropology Professor Dr. Lisa Marie Anselmi have spent the last four weeks excavating a small area near the Beaver Island golf course. A public open house was held on Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27th.
This is the second visit by the archaeological field school to the Martin/Martin II site. Dr. Anselmi, teaching assistant Lisa Przepiora and ten students are at the site from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day scraping layers of soil in test pits then putting the soil through a screen in search of artifacts. Found during this excavation are sandstone and flakes from projectile points and chipped stone tools dating back to the Early Woodland period, ca. 1300 - 500 B.C. Also found was brick and rope thought to be from the middle to late 1800's. To alert future archaeologists, at the end of the school the students put a piece of plastic in each test pit with a penny from 2008 before refilling. Field Study Pamphlet.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission is pleased to announce that Frank and Jeannette Levin of Amherst will serve as the honorary chairs of the third annual “Paddles Up” event being held on July 26, 2008 at Beaver Island State Park.
In 1992, the Levins contributed money to save Strawberry Island, an important ecological island in the Niagara River, which was being compromised by erosion.    Paddles Up is an annual event for the Niagara River Greenway Commission and is a non competitive 4.8 mile paddle around the southeastern end of Beaver Island State Park. Paddles Up is sponsored by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Northtown Subaru and begins at 8:30 a.m. with a product demonstration and paddle fair at the Little Beaver Island Launch site. At noon, a Native American departure ceremony will take place with launching at 12:15 p.m. The paddle is followed by a lunch fundraiser sponsored by the Grand Island Historical Society. 2007 Photo
The Niagara River Greenway Commission (NRGC) announces the Third Annual "Paddles Up Niagara" along the south eastern shores of Grand Island on July 26, 2008. Beaver Island State Park along with Northtown Subaru will host the day's activities with the centerpiece being the non-competitive paddle from the Little Beaver Launch site around to East River Marsh Site returning back to Little Beaver all within the Beaver Island State Park, a 4.8-mile journey.
The day begins with the Paddle Fair at 8:30 a.m. During this portion of the event paddlesports retailers and company representatives will be on hand to give the public an opportunity to try out canoes and kayaks. Beginners and enthusiasts alike will also have the opportunity to learn more about paddlesports safety and the natural, recreational and cultural attributes of the Niagara River corridor. New York State Park's Interpretive Staff will be on hand for "Learn to Paddle," an introductory canoe program for children. Paddles Up will begin after a traditional Native American Departure Ceremony at 12 noon.
The phrase "paddles up" is derived from a longstanding Native American custom. When approaching camp canoe paddles were pointed skyward signifying that the traveler comes in peace and is seeking permission to land for food and rest. In some cultures the upward pointed paddle also symbolizes the start of a long journey.
The first 100 paddle powered boaters to register will receive a free "Paddles Up Niagara 2008" t-shirt. All on water participants will be required to register and complete the necessary waiver forms. Boat crews must wear a US Coast Guard approved Personal Floatation Device and the condition of each participating canoe and kayak will be checked to insure that it can safely transit the Paddles Up Niagara water trail.
All of the day's activities are free including registration for Paddles Up Niagara, the exception is a Lunch Fund Raiser & Tour of the Historic River Lea Site, a prepaid donation of $10 is required, normal State Park entrance fees will apply. Upon entering Beaver Island State Park, participants should take the first right toward the Sledding Hill or Little Beaver for parking and launching.

Hoyt Announces Quarter-million Dollar Grant To Grand Island for Fisherman's Park
Project Will Contribute To Island's Recreational Assets - June 2008

Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) announced today the award to Grand Island of a $267,593 grant from the State Environmental Protection Fund's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program for the Fisherman's Park project. These grants focus on economic, environmental, community, and recreational improvements which contribute to revitalizing communities and enhancing the environment. Fisherman's Park was one of 64 projects funded through the EPF-LWRP in Upstate New York.
Assemblymember Hoyt commented, "I am proud to help secure these funds which will enable Grand Island to undertake this impressive and important waterfront project. As an ardent environmentalist and the author of the legislation that created the Greenway Commission, connecting people to our waterfront - one of our region's most important assets - this is one of my highest priorities. This project will clean up an abandoned site and create a beautiful place for Island families to enjoy for generations to come."
Fisherman's Park will be located on a vacant parcel of land along the Niagara River and will clean up an abandoned site, removing broken-down equipment, installing safety features and improving the retaining wall and sanitary sewer station. Once complete, the park will feature bike/pedestrian walkways and bike racks, picnic areas, gardens and a fishing pavilion.
Hoyt concluded, "Grand Island boasts excellent riverfront views, parkland and recreational areas, and the completion of this project will add one more great location for Island residents to relax and enjoy nature. I look forward to the park's opening and am pleased to be able to help ensure that Grand Island has access to state funds for important projects such as this."

The Grand Island “One Island” committee kicked off “Project Sticker Shock,” a youth-led initiative to change adult attitudes about selling and providing alcohol to minors at TOPS Markets, Family Express, Rite-Aid, Aceti’s Wine & Spirits, and Rose Liquor Store on Thursday June 5th. This public awareness campaign will be taking place in stores countywide this month. The project is sponsored by the Erie County Council for the prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse to bring attention to the issue during the busy party season of high school proms and graduations.
Local youth from Grand Island are part of a movement of youth county-wide working with participating stores to spread "Sticker Shock” waves across Erie County in an effort to reach adults who might be tempted to buy alcohol for youth under 21 who can’t buy it legally themselves. The blue and green stickers are placed on beer cases and provide a strong reminder that “Providing Alcohol to Minors is Illegal,” fines are up to $1,000.00, and up to one year in jail.
Adults need to set a better example for kids - “When adults supply alcohol to youth it sends us a very mixed message.” Underage drinking is not a teen problem, but a community problem. Adults, youth, law enforcement and retail stores all need to be part of the solution.
“A strong community message is sent when our local businesses team up and take responsibility for speaking out against underage drinking.”

Earth Dimensions, Inc. (EDI), a soils and environmental consulting firm located in Elma, New York, celebrated 30 years of serving Western New York and surrounding areas this past year. Instead of marking the occasion with a lavish party, EDI commemorated “the big 3-0” by planting 61 trees across Western New York. The Town of Grand Island was pleased to accept two of the trees for planting in the Marion Klingel Town Common. Other locations receiving trees include various municipalities, schools, parks, and businesses throughout the area. Don Owens, founder of EDI, was on hand Friday, May 2 to help plant the trees on Grand Island. He said, “The donation of trees goes hand-in-hand with EDI’s culture of positive environmental stewardship. EDI’s celebratory gift of trees will beautify the locations for years to come.” Grand Island’s trees are a bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) and a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and are located to the east of the brick semicircle on the Whitehaven Road side of the Town Common.
Both trees are Root Production Method (RPM) trees from RPM Ecosystems. RPM is a natural proprietary process that produces mature trees two to three times faster than normal without genetic modification. RPM trees have a 90 percent survival rate and are used primarily in conservation, mitigation, restoration and reforestation work. The process also enables hardwood trees to bear fruits and nuts three times faster than normal, which provides significant wildlife benefits. Having two RPM trees in the center of town provides a very visible spot for residents to observe their growth. Stop by and take a look!
For additional information about Earth Dimensions, Inc. visit http://www.earthdimensionsedi.com. RPM Ecosystems, located in Dryden, New York, is the first of six RPM nurseries to be established in the U.S. and currently serves 15 states in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions. For additional information visit http://rpmecosystems.com
Several memorial trees are located in the Town Common, as well as 15 trees that were planted by volunteers in fall 2007 as part of a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Grant in cooperation with Re-TreeWNY. White Oak Trees were very important to the history of Grand Island. When the East Boston Company bought 16,000 acres of Grand Island in 1833, they did it to harvest the vast white oak forests. The Whitehaven Settlement, established by Stephen White in 1834, was the largest steam operated sawmill of its time and used the white oaks for Yankee Clipper Ship masts.
In recent years there has been an effort to re-establish white oak trees on Grand Island. The bur oak from EDI is the sixth oak to be planted on the Town Common and joins a white oak planted by the Golden Age Club several years ago and four white oaks planted last fall. In addition to the oaks, there are numerous flowering varieties of crabapple, pear and lilac that are in bloom right now.

Rob Ray will serve as the honorary chairman of the Walk, which will be emceed by 97 Rock's Rob Lederman.
The Kids Create Hope Walk is the premier event of the Kids Create Hope: Shane G. Ferguson, MD Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. This Fund was established by the family of Shane Ferguson, a Western New York pediatrician who passed away in September 2006 after a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Kids Create Hope was established in association with Carly’s Club at Roswell Park to accomplish two goals: supporting pediatric cancer research and empowering children to be proactive, giving members of society.
"During his illness, Shane often denounced the lack of funding to research his rare tumor. However, prior to his death, he requested that any money donated in his name should be given to pediatric cancer research," says Gail Ferguson, MD, Dr. Ferguson's wife. "His goal was to give young cancer patients the chance to optimize their futures."

Hoyt Calls For Immediate Public Process to Select New Bridge - 2008

Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) responded today to the news that the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority were scrapping plans to build a signature bridge by calling for an immediate public process to weigh in on a new design.
"This community has spent years and countless hours of time evaluating and voting for their preferred bridge designs. It is unacceptable to simply toss that out the window and unilaterally select a different design without any public input," Hoyt said. "Throughout this process our community members and our neighbors in Canada have educated themselves about the pros and cons of the various options and in several cases have voted for choices that represented a compromise. There's no reason to think that the community cannot or should not be entrusted with that responsibility again now."
The public originally advocated for a replacement span, but ultimately compromised on a companion span. The public also advocated for a 6-lane bridge to allow for greater flexibility and adaptability in the future, but out of cost considerations compromised on accepting a 3-lane span. While the triple-arch design was among the designs offered to the public for consideration, it was rejected in favor of the Christian Menn cable-stayed design. Hoyt questioned why Menn was not approached about possibly modifying his design to account for the new concerns.
"I am not advocating that we ignore the environmental issues, as one of the Legislature's leading environmentalists I understand and respect the need to protect important wildlife and their habitats, but I am saying that this decision must be made by our community and not by the administration of the PBA. It is unfortunate that our community's passion for a signature bridge will not be realized, but we must now work together to find consensus on a new plan," said Hoyt.

Town Tree Planting - Re-TreeWNY - 2008

Grand Island volunteers, in conjunction with Re-TreeWNY, will plant trees on Saturday, May 10, 2008, beginning at 9 a.m. All are invited to come and help in this worthwhile community project. Meet in the parking lot of Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road. Trees will be planted in the right-of-way along Grand Island Blvd. between Whitehaven and Baseline roads.
Re-TreeWNY is a citizen-driven non-profit organization that began in response to the October 2006 storm. More information about the effort can be found at www.re-treewny.org. Grand Island was awarded a $4,200 grant from the New York State Department of Conservation in 2007 to replace trees and the Town Board added $4,200 to the grant and decided to become a part of Re-TreeWNY. As a result of those actions, a group of town residents interested in trees has been meeting and developing a plan for tree planting, education and maintenance on the Island. Over eighty Grand Island volunteers planted sixty trees, purchased from Re-TreeWNY, on town property last Fall, in the Town Common, on Fire Company property and in Veterans Park.
Over the winter, when Re-TreeWNY requested municipal coordinators from each town or village involved in the effort, Island residents Rochelle Smith and Geri Stalica agreed to represent Grand Island. Rochelle is a faculty member of the horticulture department at Finger Lakes Community College, a two term, past president of the Master Gardener Program for Cornell Cooperative Extension and developed the guidelines and individual street tree placement plans for the City of Rochester Street Tree Planting Plan. Geri has always been interested in trees and has planted many on her property. As a new member of the East Park Garden Club, she volunteered to represent the Club in the effort to choose appropriate trees for Grand Island Boulevard.

Hoyt Secures $1.59 Million Increase For Grand Island Public Schools - April 2008
$1,265 Million for Beaver Island Park in '08-'09 Budget

Thurs., April 10, 2008 . . . Assemblymember Sam Hoyt announced today that the 2008-2009 state budget contains a $1.59 million increase in school aid for the Grand Island public schools. That number represents a 9.3 percent increase from the last fiscal year. The school district will receive a record total of $17.79 million in state aid.
Hoyt said, "This is great news for Grand Island's school children. This increase in school aid will help lessen property tax increases and allow the Grand Island schools to continue reforming and enhancing its programs. This increase represents real progress towards providing our schools with the tools and the funding they need to provide our children with the best quality education possible."
Hoyt has led the charge both for increased funding for public schools as well as increased fiscal accountability. He has introduced legislation designed to reform the state's school aid funding formula as well as legislation that would increase safety in our children's schools.
"On behalf of the Grand Island School Board of Education, we deeply appreciate the efforts Assemblyman Hoyt has made on our behalf." said Robert W. Christmann, Grand Island School Superintendent.
Hoyt commented, "The legislature worked hard under extreme circumstances to pass a budget that stabilizes school taxes for the residents of Grand Island. This will allow our educators to focus on what's really important for the children of Grand Island and that's educating our children."
Mr. Christmann concluded, "As a result of Assemblyman Hoyt's hard work, we were able to maintain programs in the Grand Island school district while keeping our tax rate increase well below the cost of living."
The budget also included $265,000 in the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation budget for improvements at Beaver Island State Park.
Hoyt commented, "Beaver Island Park is one of our area's most beautiful places to enjoy our region's natural beauty and to relax with family and friends. These funds will help provide critical infrastructure improvements that will help ensure that Island families will be able to enjoy the park for years to come."
The funds include $1 Million for roadway improvements, $115,000 for rehabilitation of the maintenance center, $100,000 for upgrades to the irrigation system, and $50,000 for the Beaver Island Clubhouse.

Hoyt, Maziarz Call For Transfer of I-190 To State DOT
Move Would Eliminate Tolls - 2008

Friday, February 22 . . .Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) and Senator George D. Maziarz (R-Newfane) announced today in the Grand Island Town Hall that they have introduced legislation that would transfer the I-190 from the New York State Thruway Authority to the Department of Transportation.
Hoyt said, "Transferring the I-190 to the Department of Transportation makes sense because the I-190 is not part of the mainline thruway, and as such is better maintained by the DOT like our other state roadways."
Currently the New York State Thruway Authority is responsible for more than 640 miles of roadway, of which, only 215 miles are non-mainline spurs, including the 21 miles of the roadway that comprises the I-190. The Grand Island bridge tolls are one of only a handful of toll-collection points off the mainline thruway. Eliminating this toll will benefit residents and commuters alike, as well as removing a potential impediment for Grand Island businesses whose customers are forced to pay this toll to patronize these businesses.
"Western New Yorkers are tired of unnecessary toll increases and Assemblyman Hoyt and I have come up with a way to not only eliminate tolls at the Grand Island Bridge, but also to provide a mechanism to make the bridge eligible for federal aid," said Senator Maziarz. "Estimates show the bridge costs between $8 to $9 million dollars each year to operate and maintain, yet the New York State Thruway Authority collected over $22 million in tolls in 2006. These unnecessary tolls put residents, commuters and business owners on Grand Island at a financial disadvantage. Transferring the bridge to the State DOT and eliminating this toll is the solution."
The I-190 was constructed by the Thruway Authority between November 1956 and December 1960, at which time there was one bridge at each end of the Island. The Authority constructed the second south bridge in 1962, and the second north bridge in 1964. Bringing this roadway under the jurisdiction of the State DOT, whose budget is subject to legislative and executive review and approval, will help ensure that wasteful spending does not contribute to higher toll costs for New York State travelers.
Sam Hoyt represents the 144th Assembly District.
George Maziarz represents the 62nd Senate District.
